Trust me, the dentist loves nothing more than you to booking an appointment with them for an in-office teeth whitening. Chances are, they will even discourage you from getting home kits. Heck some decades back, that was the only way of whitening your teeth but times have changed. But here are the cold facts laid on the table.Lets examine what you go through whitening at the dentist and at home.
Dentist: When you book an appointment to whiten your teeth at the dentist, your dentist would first of all take molds of your teeth ( like an imprint of the shape of your teeth) and send them off to a laboratory. Then in 5- 10 days (in Nigeria maybe a month) you will receive a mouth piece custom made for you. Next you sit for 2-3 hours with the plastic mold in your mouth, filled with peroxide, pressed to your teeth and gums. This you have to repeat for 3-4 visits to the dentist, after which your teeth will be certified whiter. This costs nothing less than between 80 thousand- and 150 thousand naira. Then you have to come back like 6 months later for another whitening or rather touch up.

Common Causes of Yellow Teeth
Poor oral hygiene is one of the causes of yellow teeth, but even the most consistent teeth brusher and flosser can develop the discolored teeth that occur simply with age. Excessive fluoride exposure is also among the causes of yellow teeth, especially in children.
What Are Other Causes of Yellow Teeth?
Other causes of yellow teeth include:
Diet: Certain foods that are high in tannins, such as red wine, are potential causes of yellow teeth.
Smoking: Smoking is one of the top causes of yellow teeth, and stains from smoking can be stubborn. But smokers can improve their yellow teeth by quitting smoking, following a complete oral care routine of twice-daily tooth brushing and daily flossing, and using the right teeth whitening products.
Illness: Certain medical conditions or medications are also causes of yellow teeth. Patients who are undergoing chemotherapy for head or neck cancers may develop yellow or stained teeth. Also, certain types of prescription medications including medications for asthma and high blood pressure are causes of yellow teeth.
Overcoming the Causes of Yellow Teeth: How White Is White Enough?
A good estimate of natural-looking whiteness is the level of whiteness in the whites of your eyes. If any of the causes of yellow teeth have left you unsatisfied with your smile, you have many choices of whitening products. Consider the causes of yellow teeth in your expectations for teeth whitening, but be sure to check with your dentists first and follow instructions carefully—don’t use the products beyond the recommended time frame.
